In this
coursework, the school counseling theory employed is the humanistic-existential
counseling method, which gets based on phenomenological philosophy, a
philosophy way that explores an individual’s subjective inner reality to result
in behavior influence. The humanistic-existential approaches believe that
people can make independent decisions and for self-awareness.
Counselors
employing this theory can draw freely from three humanistic-existential methods
namely the Gestalt counseling, existential counseling and person-centered
counseling (Gehart, 2015). In the media, the counseling practitioner aimed at
assisting the client to discover the meaning of life through entering their
reality and staying in the here and now. The client was able to confront their
anxiety in the therapeutic sessions hence improving their lives through
increasing authenticity, accepting responsibility and living purposefully.
Counseling
practitioners must embrace multicultural competency in therapy and counseling.
Religion and spirituality are among the main factors that influence a client’s
and a counselor’s beliefs, experiences, behavior, values and illness patterns.
Considering religion and spirituality in a therapy session assist the counselor
to support the client connect to other people, move outside of them as well as
lead to a positive outcome. For client’s, their level of religion and
spirituality affect the manner in which they assess distressful scenarios in
their lives through giving a meaning to life and offering them a greater sense
of control above these circumstances (Nickles, 2011). Counselors must respect a
client’s religious and spiritual beliefs and values such as taboos and
attributions.
The use of
existential interventions indicates the counselors use the humanistic-existential
principle of counseling, in which the focus on the client’s potential, present
experience and meaningful values. The use of the intervention was effective
because the counselor was able to influence the client’s behavior. A useful insight
that I gained in this course is the significant role played by the spiritual
beliefs of a client and counselor in leading to positive therapy outcome.
