Pressure ulcers also called pressure sores, or bedsores are ulcers that form soft tissue or muscles press against a hard surface like chairs or beds. The pressure exerted by these surfaces on the body prevents the supply of blood to the affected area. The lack of blood to the affected body part leads to the death of the skin tissue of that area. People who are likely to have pressure ulcers are those who:

·         Spend a many hours in bed or chair

·         Are underweight or overweight

·         Spend several hours in one position, or

·         Cannot control their bowels or bladder

But one can prevent these problems using several practices. These practices include:

Changing position frequently:

One can avoid having pressure ulcer by frequently changing his or her position. The frequent and regular changes to your position are the most effective way of preventing pressure sores. The preventive measure works best for those working in offices for long our, people using wheelchairs and those who are bed laden. Office workers should have frequent breaks while those using wheelchairs should change their position after every thirty minutes. Similarly, those confined to bed should change their position at least once in two ours.

Nutrition:

Eating healthy and balanced diets will help you reduce the chances of having pressure ulcers or help in the healing process. The diet one takes should have enough proteins, good variety of vitamins and minerals.

Quit smoking:

Quitting smoking is effective in the prevention of pressure ulcers. Smoking makes the immune system weak and reduces the levels of oxygen in the blood. Thus, it increases the chances of developing pressure ulcers.

Checking your skin:

If one has, a history of pressure ulcers should frequently check his or her body in order to detect any signs of pressure ulcers. Early detection would help manage the ulcers.
