Abstract
This essay
provides an introduction about the modern American bachelor’s degree. I will
point out the issues as to why students should take more courses outside their
departments before majoring in their intended disciplines. The essay ends with
the conclusion of the major points.
In the last 150 years, the American bachelor’s
degree has mainly focused on majors, the home department of each student and
specializations. The General Education has been around for some time but it has
become unfocused and weaker, eroded and disrespected.
Degrees have become
tougher to match up with the toughness of the world. Instead, administrators
and legislators have simplified the degree into graduation targets, efficiency
initiatives, a list of outcomes and courses that can double count into more
than one requirement. However, there is a need for Colleges to provide General
Education as a class that ensures each student should take outside their
department or major.
General
education has to provide more than it does. A fairly typical kind of General
Education program is to the California State University. It requires students
to take almost one year and a half in completing courses and classes of various
categories of advanced and basic levels. Students choose from the offerings
from different departments in the university. On the basic skill levels, students
can specialize in critical thinking, oral and written communication. They can
also choose other courses in sciences, humanities, and social sciences. The
provision of these courses is through the smorgasbord approach provided as
common courses for all students.
This
approach lacks the vital functions of General Education.
It is
essential for students to take up classes outside their departments as an anti-
provincialism function of general education. It will require students to take a
basic two-year sequence class on intellectual history on human beings best
ideas that we have had and the criticism of these ideas. Such a requirement
will require students to step outside their departments and major discipline to
undertake a minor in Science, Social Science and Humanities. The move will
equip graduates in dealing with the urgent and complex issues of the world that
are not in their major courses.
Conclusion
Therefore,
it is not right to say that adopting the General Education approach is too
expensive for the learning institutions and taxpayers. It is because degrees
should not be simply being reduced to the years of study. The education of
students should be a channel of students being prepared to face the real issues
facing the world. Therefore, it is upon the universities and colleges to
protect their reputations of producing students who are well conversant with
the challenges of the world. The students are those with the knowledge of
generating solutions based on their study and enrollment in of General courses,
Great Books Programs, Liberal Arts program, Humanities program.
