Everything
we do and in every place we live, some rules or guiding principles are always
there to direct us into how we should behave towards certain phenomena. Rules
are also placed and implemented to control us from trampling over each other.
If we all adhere to rule, we live in peace. Rules are thus there to provide us
with a way to unify our attitudes and reasoning. Instructions are similar to
rules in that they are equal to directions that also fuse our actions towards
similar objectives.
They are very important particularly in education, as they
are a common way through which learning is made possible. There is specifically
no way else that education can transpire if the instructor gives no
instructions to the learner. This paper describes what the term instruction
means and how one can do something following the instructions provided.
Definition
According
to Schumm (2006), the term instruction refers to a set of statements or a
single statement that describes or guides through how something can be done. It
is synonymous with an order or command that ideally demands that a certain
route or course be followed to reach a certain desired type of output. As such,
instructions can entail following a certain procedure through systematically a
series of steps from the first (introductory) to the last (conclusive) to
succeed in a project.
Importance
It
is imperative that instruction be followed, or a worker will eventually lose
his job, a child will get punished, or a student will fail in a certain
examination. Lobb (1999) asserts that following instructions and listening are
some of the essential skills needed as they are next to obedience and helps one
get through life and earn the best out of a career at a school. Ignorance to
adherence to instructions could lead someone to dire consequences in the
present and the future life. So it is important to take heed of instruction as
they are the best steps in acknowledging the role of authority that are
responsible direct and control our actions for the common good. Suppose no
student follows the directions of the teacher in class. There will be in chaos
in a class. Similarly, if citizens fail to follow rules and binding laws, the
country will be in regular wars. Instructions make everything run smoothly and
better (Schumm, 2006).
How
to do something by following instructions
Instructions
are not always simple to follow, particularly if they are lengthy and complex
(Schumm, 2006). Lengthy statements in instructions are discouraging as they
take much time to read and interpret. On the other hand, complex instructions
are hard to figure out, and the reader or the follower may not understand what
the instructor requires to be done. The following is a description of what
entails doing something through following instructions (Lobb, 1999. To be able
to follow instruction, it is imperative that when one receives a set of
instructions, the first thing to do is to read through all the instructions one
by one and completely. Some people scheme through instructions hurriedly and
though this may be because of the time limitations, it is paramount to read
every word of the instructional statement. Some students even go to the extent
of ignoring the first instructions on the cover page of an exam paper and go on
answering the questions. Suppose the first instructions said do not answer any
question?
The second step is to figure out what the
instructions meant for. Understanding the scope of what the instructions
directs us to do is also very important. It is thus important to deduce what
was meant by each statement or otherwise act contrary (Schumm, 2006). Once, the
instructions have been deciphered, the third thing to do is to figure out what
one is required to accomplish. Every statement of the instructions requires an
output. As such, the output of the first instruction might be what is required
to be acted upon by the subsequent instruction. As such, a person should
understand or critically think about what to expect as the output of the first
instruction before the next (Schumm, 2006).
Next,
reread the instructions to familiarize critically with them. Reading the
instruction, interpreting them and exemplifying the output of each instruction
enable one to have the following. First, he/she gains insight of what the
instructions are all about and what they are meant for. Secondly, he/she
identifies and the orderliness or sequence of all instructions from the first
through the last (Lobb, 1999. Redoing this enables one to memorize the
instructions that allow him/her to be swift in doing as directed.
The
next step is to perform what each instruction directs starting from the first
to the last based on what he/she understood. After this, the end results are
checked and compared with the expected results. If the delivered results are in
conflict with what was expected, a person should pretend to be an instructor
and check for bugs, after this, the poor work should be cleaned and restarted
(Lobb, 1999. A fresh reading of instruction is done this time paying attention
to finer details. It is good to take time and think openly to understand each
step. That will help identify the areas that sourced errors. This time, the
results should be better or excellent (Schumm, 2006).
